How to Capture Epic Wide Angle Seascape Photography

Olympic National Park

Every now and then, everything just lines up: the tide, the clouds, the waves, and the light goes absolutely wild. That’s exactly what happened during this trip to the Olympic Coast. I filmed my new seascape video, which you can check out above.

Olympic is a place that constantly tests your patience. Ninety percent of the time, you get skunked. But that ten percent is pure magic.

I was working mostly with a 12-24mm wide-angle lens, trying to balance the chaos of the waves with the drama in the sky. I talk more about the technique in the video, but it really came down to capturing the overall motion of the waves and leading the viewer into the sea stacks in the background.

Below, I’ve added some of my favorite frames from the video. They capture the intensity of that light better than words ever could, from the glowing reflections on wet sand to the sea stacks catching the last color before dusk.
