INFORMATION
Oregon is remarkably diverse, and over the course of this workshop we'll experience some of the very best the state has to offer. We begin in the high desert of Central Oregon, photographing dramatic rock walls and formations before making our way north to the Columbia River Gorge. Spring is a magical time in the Gorge, with vibrant greens, flowing streams, and powerful waterfalls around every corner. Depending on the season, there may even be wildflowers and mountain views to enjoy. We finish the workshop on the North Oregon Coast, timing our final field sessions around favorable tides for unique seascape opportunities and the chance to explore tidepools teeming with life.
A general schedule will be shared at the beginning of the workshop, but we'll always keep an eye on weather, water levels, tides, and conditions to determine the best places and times to photograph. Some mornings may have us chasing first light, while others may be better spent exploring shaded forest streams later in the day. No matter the conditions, there are opportunities everywhere, from sweeping landscapes to intimate scenes and macro subjects. This is a workshop designed to stretch your creativity and encourage you to slow down and see more.
Adrian Klein and Michael Shainblum will lead the workshop from start to finish, and we are excited to welcome renowned photographer and master of the Gorge, Gary Randall, during the core days in the Columbia River Gorge. With three Oregon photographers and a small group, participants can expect plenty of individual attention in the field, as well as image reviews and discussions throughout the week.
This is a self-drive workshop, with participants responsible for transportation between Redmond, Hood River, and Cannon Beach. Once based in each area, we will coordinate carpools to field locations whenever possible. Lodging is not included, and hotel recommendations will be provided.
Participants should be comfortable hiking up to approximately five miles per day, although many outings will be shorter. Most hikes involve minimal to moderate elevation gain, but trails can be wet, slippery, rocky, or sandy depending on conditions. Participants should be comfortable carrying their own gear over uneven terrain.
GENERAL ITINERARY
Day 1-2
The workshop begins Sunday afternoon in Redmond, Oregon. After introductions and an orientation session, we'll head out to photograph the dramatic landscapes of Central Oregon. Towering rock walls, winding rivers, and expansive views make this region a beautiful contrast to the lush forests that await later in the week. We plan to spend our first sunrise at iconic Smith Rock before making our way north.
Day 2-5
We'll then travel to Hood River and spend the next several days exploring the waterfalls, streams, and forests of the Columbia River Gorge. Spring brings vibrant greens, powerful waterfalls, and perhaps even lingering wildflowers. During these core days, we are excited to welcome renowned photographer and master of the Gorge, Gary Randall, whose local knowledge and decades of experience will help us make the most of this incredible region.
Day 5-6
For the final portion of the workshop, we'll head west to Cannon Beach and the North Oregon Coast. Timing our visit around favorable tides allows us to explore tidepools, sea stacks, and dynamic coastal scenes that make this area so special. We'll spend our final sunset and sunrise photographing the coast before gathering for breakfast together on the last morning.

TRAVEL & INSURANCE:
For traveling to the workshop, we recommend flying into Portland International Airport (PDX) and renting a car. It is a ~3-hour drive from the airport to Redmond, Oregon. So it is best to arrive in Oregon at least a day before the workshop starts on the 6th. After we wrap the trip in Cannon Beach, Oregon, it is about a 2-hour drive back to (PDX). So that is something to consider for your return trip, and it's best to fly out the day after the workshop on the 8th.
We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment in expenses such as flights and lodging. Travel insurance is affordable and readily available; a list of providers can be found here.
LODGING:
Lodging is not included. We will provide suggested lodging that we use and where we will meet to start field sessions.
